Minimalism Challenge Calculator
Run the 30-day minimalism game — one item on day one, two on day two — and track the total you’ll clear, today’s quota, and what’s left.
Your declutter tally
A game that builds momentum
Decluttering fails most often not for lack of will but for lack of a starting point. The minimalism game fixes that by making day one almost trivial — a single item — and letting the difficulty ramp up only once the habit has taken hold. By the time the daily quota is genuinely demanding, you’ve already cleared dozens of things and can see the space opening up.
The totals surprise people: a single quiet month clears 465 items, and playing with a partner clears nearly a thousand between you. Use the tracker to keep the target concrete — set today’s day number to see exactly what you owe and how close the finish line is.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the 30-day minimalism challenge work?
On day one you remove one item from your home, on day two you remove two, on day three three, and so on. By the end of a 30-day month you've removed items totalling 1 + 2 + 3 + … + 30 = 465 things. 'Removed' means out the door — donated, recycled, sold, or binned — not simply moved to another room. The escalating count keeps early days easy and builds momentum before the harder final week.
Why does the total come to 465?
It's the sum of the numbers 1 through 30, which follows the formula N × (N + 1) ÷ 2. For 30 days that's 30 × 31 ÷ 2 = 465. The calculator uses the same formula for any challenge length, so a 15-day version clears 120 items and a 21-day version clears 231.
Can I play with a partner?
Yes — that's the classic version. Set the number of people and each participant removes the same daily count, so a two-person 30-day game clears 930 items between you. A little friendly competition helps everyone reach the tougher final days.
What if I fall behind or the last days get hard?
The back end is meant to be challenging — that's where the real decluttering happens. If a day defeats you, carry the shortfall forward rather than quitting, or shorten the challenge to a length you can finish. Set 'today is day…' to see exactly how many you owe now and how many remain, so the goal stays concrete.
A planning and tracking aid. The counts are exact for the rules of the game; what counts as “removed” — donated, sold, recycled — is up to you.
